The ODK16Tr Truss Optimised Dall-Kirkham Telescope is our flagship 400mm (16-inch) observatory-grade optical tube assembly (OTA), meticulously engineered to deliver uncompromised performance for advanced deep-sky astrophotography, research, and high-resolution planetary viewing. Developed in response to global demand from research institutions and elite astrophotographers, this open-truss instrument provides spectacular light-gathering power without compromising mechanical integrity.
Uncompromising 3-Element Corrector System
While other telescopes on the market often cut corners by utilizing simple 2-lens correctors, the ODK16Tr is designed with a premium, multi-coated 3-lens integrated corrector system. Extensive computer modeling and rigorous physical testing prove that 3 lens elements are essential to yielding a completely flat, wide field. This premium layout achieves an exceptionally tight 2.4µm spot size on axis and a mere 6.0µm at the field edge, creating a flawless, aberration-free imaging circle spanning greater than 52mm to perfectly suit modern large-format sensors.
Thermal-Safe Carbon Fibre Truss Construction
To maintain absolute focal stability during long, sub-zero imaging sequences, the ODK16Tr uses an open carbon fibre sandwich truss framework. This advanced geometry offers maximum rigidity while virtually eliminating structural flexure and thermal expansion. Because the focal point stays locked in place through changing nighttime ambient temperatures, the need for repetitive automated refocusing routines is minimized.
Rigid CNC Flotation Mirror Cell & Thermal Control
The substantial 400mm primary mirror is securely housed within a custom honeycomb CNC-machined aluminium mirror cell, providing distortion-free mechanical support. To combat boundary layer air currents and accelerate thermal equilibrium, the cell integrates 3 controllable cooling fans. This active management ensures stable, ultra-sharp imaging configurations from the moment your session begins.
Heavy-Duty 3″ CERES Focuser
Supporting large-format cameras, complex filter wheels, and heavy instruments requires a rock-solid platform. The ODK16Tr is equipped as standard with our specialized 3” CERES focuser, complete with a 10:1 reduction Crayford mechanism for ultra-precise focus adjustment. With a generous 216mm back-focal distance from the rear of the mirror cell, your setup will easily accommodate extensive imaging trains with absolute structural rigidity.
Every ODK16Tr is hand-crafted and customized to client observatory specifications at our dedicated UK workshop. Bespoke mounting configurations, custom dovetail plates, and internal secondary/primary dew heaters are available below or upon request.
